2 kg of heroin seized, woman arrested

CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at the Chennai international terminal arrested a 29-year-old woman from Philippines and seized two kg of heroin from her on Thursday night.
K. Engineer, Joint Commissioner of Customs, (Airport), said the authorities intercepted Fernandez Darel Riano on suspicion. A search of her hand baggage did not yield anything. However, a suitcase carried by her as checked-in luggage raised suspicion. When the authorities opened the bottom portion, it contained a brown-coloured taped packet containing heroin.
The woman, a receptionist with a hotel in Bangkok, boarded a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Mumbai on Tuesday last. The next day, she went to New Delhi, where she met another Philippino national, who handed over the suitcase containing the drug, Mr. Engineer said.
The passenger admitted that she agreed to carry the drug for a monetary consideration. The seized contraband was valued at Rs.2 crore in the international market, Mr. Engineer added.
