Narrow escape for passengers as bus hits train near Pamban

SMASHED: The State Transport Corporation bus, which was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing at Akkalmadam in Ramanathapuram district on Friday.

RAMANATHAPURAM: A major accident was averted when the driver of a State-owned transport corporation bus applied sudden brake and stopped the bus even as a train was crossing an unmanned railway gate at Akkalmadam near Pamban on Friday. The train was proceeding to Rameswaram from Madurai.

However, the front portion of the bus was smashed due to the impact of the slight collision. In the process, a few passengers suffered minor injuries. .

An eye witness said, there were about 30 passengers in the bus , which was on its way to Kundhukal from Pamban. As the bus almost neared the railway gate, driver Nagendran, who saw the approaching train, applied the brake.

Though the bus hit the train, passengers its passengers escaped narrowly.

“I raised an alarm when I saw the approaching train . The driver acted instantly. Had the driver not applied the brake, it would have been major accident. said a passenger.
