17 proposals for airport name

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Even as many organisations are suggesting names for the new international airport at Devanahalli, the new Government will take a call on it, according to V.P. Baligar, Principal Secretary, Infrastructure Department.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, at the opening of the new airport, Mr. Baligar said the Government had received 17 proposals in this regard, and among the names suggested were Kempe Gowda, Tipu Sultan, Basaveshwara, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Visvesvaraya and H.D. Deve Gowda.

The Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL), he said, had left the decision to the government. Earlier, BIAL Chief Executive Officer Albert Brunner had told presspersons that for the time being the airport would be known as the Bengaluru International Airport.

Stating that the HAL Airport issue is not a closed chapter as yet, Mr. Baligar said that the government would seriously renegotiate with the BIAL on the issue. “We have to arrive at some understanding on this issue,” he added.

“Aspects covering commercial and logistics operations need to be considered and renegotiation will commence on the basis of the survey being conducted by the Airports Authority of India,” he said.
