Zardari cites Priyanka’s jail visit

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: The PPP leader, Asif Ali Zardari, on Saturday cited Priyanka Vadra’s Vellore jail visit as a lesson in political reconciliation.

He said this when he was asked at a press conference why he was thinking of including in his plan of “national reconciliation”, the Pakistan Muslim League (Q), which lost the February election, and which he had described as “Qatil [killer] League” immediately after the assassination of his wife Benazir.

“After [all these] years, Priyanka Gandhi goes to jail, and she meets with the people who sent her father to his death,” Mr. Zardari said.

“There are lessons to be learnt from a bigger democracy.”

Mr. Zardari said the PPP did not believe in the politics of revenge, and repeated the line made famous by his son Bilawal after Benazir’s killing: “Democracy is the best revenge.”
