Steps initiated to check price rise in Alappuzha

ALAPPUZHA: The District Supply Office authorities have said that stringent action has been initiated against retail shops, groceries, hotels and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) outlets in the wake of the unprecedented price rise.

According to a statement issued by the District Supply Office, raids/inspections were conducted on 1,358 retail shops and 714 groceries in the last few weeks. Action has been initiated against 125 retail shops and 103 groceries for indulging in various malpractices, including charging unreasonable rates and hoarding of stock. Also, action has been taken against 85 out of the740 hotels raided, 24 out of the 82 LPG outlets and three out of 44 petrol bunks.Inspection was conducted at 3,627 retail ration outlets, 257 wholesale ration outlets and 227 wholesale kerosene dealer outlets. Malpractices were detected in 1,316 retail ration outlets, 75 wholesale ration outlets and 46 wholesale kerosene outlets. Raids conducted on the general market led to the seizure of illegal stocks of 1,146 kg rice, 2,745 kg wheat, 4,636 litres of kerosene and 264 LPG cylinders, the statement said. Steps are afoot to distribute renewed ration cards. The Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) lists are awaited from local self-governing bodies for starting the distribution of the cards. A 35-member District Consumer Protection Samithi and a complaint cell to settle grievances too were working to tackle the price rise, the statement said.
