Work on Tamiraparani water scheme to begin soon

Seven town panchayats, 1,457 villages will get water supply

Plan to supply water on alternate days

Survey to be completed within four months

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Preliminary work on the new Tamiraparani drinking water supply scheme, which is to be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 crore, is to begin soon. The scheme envisages provision of water supply for seven town panchayats and 1,457 villages in Virudhunagar district.

Addressing a meeting to review the implementation of the scheme here on Saturday, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran wanted the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board to ensure that all villages to be covered by the scheme received Tamiraparani water on alternate days.

He pointed out that already three drinking water supply schemes were being implemented in the district with the Tamiraparani as source. The beneficiaries of these schemes were Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai, Sattur, Tiruthangal and Sivakasi municipalities, Kariapatti and Mallanginaru town panchayats and 130 villages.

He also called for steps to expedite the underground drainage work in Virudhunagar.

Managing Director of TWAD Board Swaran Singh said that officials should complete the survey for the new scheme in four months. Overhead tanks that were over 20 years old in villages would be demolished and new ones constructed.

The underground drainage work would be completed in six months. On completion of the work, the municipality could relay the roads.

The Government had sanctioned construction of 29 check-dams in the district to improve groundwater table.

According to an official press release, Collector V. Chandrasekaran said that steps had been taken to supply Tamiraparani water to all sections of people.

He wanted the officials to send proposals on construction of new overhead tanks in villages in consultation with people’s representatives.
