Feline on duty: Tama, a nine-year-old tortoiseshell cat, the “stationmaster” of Kishi, an unmanned train station, in the city of Kinokawa, Japan. The cat’s appointment to the post in January 2007 witnessed a rise in the number of passengers using the line. The Wakayama Electric Railway feeds it in lieu of salary.
