Winners exultant, losers disappointed

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: It was a moment of joy as well as disappointment for many at the T.A. Pai English Medium School where the counting of votes for the five Assembly constituencies in Udupi district were held on Sunday.

The candidates who won said they would work for the people, and one of them even said he would not hesitate if he was offered a berth in the Ministry. Some defeated candidates were philosophical about the results, while others blamed their rivals for indulging in false propaganda.

Third win

Halady Srinivas Shetty of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who won for the third consecutive time from Kundapur constituency by defeating Congress candidate and former Minister K. Jayaprakash Hegde, said he would not hesitate to become a Minister if offered the chance. “I have all the qualifications to become a Minister. I will serve the people of the State in that capacity. But I will do what my party wants me to do.”

Drinking water

Lalaji Mendon of the BJP, who defeated Congress candidate Vasanth Salian by 967 votes in Kaup constituency, said he would give importance to drinking water supply schemes and roads in the constituency. The lone Congress winner, Gopal Bhandary, who defeated the former MLA V. Sunil Kumar of the BJP in the prestigious Karkala constituency, said, “I will take up development projects in naxal-affected areas. Social change is required here. I will work for the development of the constituency under the guidance of the former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily.”
