Big blow for Bangarappa family

BANGALORE: It was an electoral battle which witnessed the decimation of brothers who contested from different parties in different constituencies. While the entire family members of the former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa was electorally wiped out in Shimoga district, it was a grand victory for the family of the former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (S) president H.D. Deve Gowda.

Mr. Gowda’s sons, former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and former Minister H.D. Revanna won their seats.

Mr. Bangarappa of Samajwadi Party lost to former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa (BJP) in Shikaripur constituency. Mr Madhu Bangarappa (SP) and Kumar Bangarappa (Congress), his sons, lost in Sorab to H. Halappa of the BJP, who secured 52,552 votes.

Mr. Bangarappa and his sons lost to BJP candidates, while Mr. Gowda’s sons humbled their arch Congress rivals Mamata Nichani and Anupama G.S. in Ramanagara and Holenarasipur constituencies.

Next is the defeat of the Merajuddin family. The State JD (S) president Merajuddin Patel and his younger brother Nasimoddin Patel, who contested on a BSP ticket, were defeated. While Mr. Merajuddin Patel lost to Rajashekar Basavaraj Patil of the Congress in Humnabad, his brother was defeated by the former Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur (JD-S) in Bidar South constituency.

For the Jarkholi brothers, it was a mixed result. One defeated another in Gokak, while two other brothers defeated their rival candidates. While two of the brothers got elected on Congress ticket, another is entering the Legislative Assembly on a JD (S) ticket. Ramesh Jarkiholi of the Congress defeated his brother Bhimshi Jarkiholi of the BJP by 10,055 votes in Gokak constituency.

Basavaraj Bommai (BJP) won in Shiggaon while his brother Mallikarjun Bommai contesting on a JD (U) ticket in Hebbal constituency in Bangalore was defeated by Katta Subramanya Naidu (BJP), former Minister.

The elections heralded the victory of cousins too. The Congress fielded the former Minister C. Byre Gowda’s son Krishna Byre Gowda from Byatarayanapura in Bangalore and he won. The Congress candidate from Chintamani in Chickballapur district, M.C. Sudhakar, son of former Home Minister M. Chowda Reddy, who once represented Chintamani, also tretained his seat. Mr. Krishna Byre Gowda and Dr. Sudhakar are cousins. Bellary district, a bastion of the Reddy bothers of the BJP, registered victory in two segments. Somashekar Reddy defeated Anil Lad of the Congress in Bellary city. His brother Mr. Karunakara Reddy humbled former Deputy Chief Minister M. P. Prakash (Congress) in Harapanahalli constituency.
