Curfew

An indefinite curfew has been clamped within a 3 km radius of the Krishnai town to prevent a communal flare up.

Deputy Commissioner Goalpara district Utpolnanda Sharma told The Hindu that the police resorted to firing to disperse a crowd that had gathered at a place about 2 km off the Krishnai police station to press for the release of some arrested persons. They turned violent and started pelting stones at the police during which several police officials and personnel were hurt.

The DC said that the police had arrested some persons, who had allegedly set fire to two houses belonging to the Rabha community, following a rumour that a body recovered in the town earlier in the day belonged to the Muslim community. The recovered body was identified by police as that of a Suren Rabha who went missing on Saturday afternoon.

The police said that the crowd had put up blockades on road and even tried to physically obstruct Deputy Inspector General of Police (western range) K. P. Singhdeo from proceeding till about 50 persons, who were arrested in connection with the incidents of arsony of houses belonging to Rabha community, were released unconditionally.
