Not all defectors were successful in polls

Bangalore: The defectors had a mixed fortune in the elections, some of them won and some lost.

The list of defectors is a long one, but there were some defectors who mattered in this election.

Defectors who lost

Big names in the State politics who defected include M.P. Prakash, former Deputy Chief Minister, from Janata Dal (S) to Congress.

He contested from Harapanahalli in Davangere district and lost to G. Karunakar Reddy of the BJP by a margin of 25,218 votes.

Anil Lad who defected from BJP to Congress lost in Bellary City to G. Somashekara Reddy of the BJP by a margin of 1,022 votes.

Mr. Anil Lad polled 53,809 votes while Mr. Somashekara Reddy polled 54,831.

B. Gopal of the Congress, who defected from the BSP just before the elections, lost to the BJP candidate by a margin of 9,862 votes in Anekal constituency in Bangalore Urban district.

G.T. Deve Gowda who defected from Janata Dal (S) to BJP came third in Hunsur after Congress and Janata Dal (S).

D.T. Jayakumar former Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader, defected to Bahujan Samaj Party just before the elections and was pushed to the fourth position in Chamundeshwari constituency in Mysore.

M. Mahadev who quit the Congress to join the BJP in Mysore lost from Chamarajanagar by a margin of 2,612.

Parimala Nagappa, who defected from the JD(S) to the BSP, lost to R. Narendra of the Congress at Hanur, with her margin of defeat being 23,140 votes.

Other defectors who lost included K.N. Rajanna, who joined Congress from Janata Dal (S) in Madhugiri constituency, K.M. Ibrahim, who joined Janata Dal (S) from Congress, was defeated in Bantwal constituency in Dakshina Kannada, M.Y. Patil, who joined BJP from Janata Dal (S) lost to Congress in Afzalpur in Gulbarga district.

But there are a few other defectors who have won after joining the new party.

The list includes H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, who joined Congress from Janata Dal (S). He won from Gundlupet by a margin of 2,203 votes over his nearest BJP rival C.S. Niranjan Kumar.

Former Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, who joined Congress from Janata Dal (S), won from Shahpur in Gulbarga district by a margin of 11,136 votes against Shivshekarappagouda of Janata Dal (S).

Santosh Lad, who joined the Congress from the JD(S), contested from Kalghatgi in Dharwad district and emerged victorious by a margin of 11,642 votes against the BJP candidate Channappa Mallappa Nimbbannavar.

Former government Chief Whip Vasant Bangera, who joined Congress from Janata Dal (S) and contested from Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada, won against his brother Prabhakar Bangera of BJP.

The former Minister B.N. Bachche Gowda, who joined the BJP from the Janata Dal D(S) before elections, won from Hoskote constituency in Bangalore Rural district.

He defeated M.T.B. Nagaraju of the Congress by a margin of 3,878 votes. Basavaraj Bommai who defected from the Janata Dal (U) to BJP won from Shiggaon by a margin 12,862 votes.
