CPI(M) blames Raje government for police firing

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: As the body count in police firing in Rajasthan continued to climb for the third day on Sunday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly condemned the “brutal killing” of people by the police.

The party noted that this was not the first time that the Vasundhara Raje government had ordered police firing. “It has earned the notoriety in police firings and is solely responsible for the present killings,” a statement by the party’s Central Committee said.

‘Open dialogue’

The CPI (M) advised the BJP government to stop the police repression and open a dialogue with the agitating Gujjars to resolve their grievances.

Within the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rajasthan issue is hanging fire. Already the party leadership has yet to deal with dissidence. The Gujjar agitation, in which the the death toll is rising, has almost overshadowed the recent terrorist attacks in Jaipur.

Party leaders opposed to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje are finding fault with her for not resolving the Gujjar problem, which is more than a year old. It has genesis in poll promises by the BJP made over four years ago.
