Residents take to road protesting irregular water supply

FOR BASIC NEEDS: Residents of Ward 6 and 7, Periyasemur Municipality, blocked the busy Sathy Road on Monday morning demanding regular water supply.

ERODE: Residents of Ward 6 and 7 of Periya Semur Municipality blocked the arterial Sathy Road on Monday morning, protesting against irregular water supply.

Hundreds of women who blocked the road with empty plastic pots complained that the 3,000-odd residents of the locality had had irregular supply from the Municipality. They said for the last six months they had received water only once in five or six days and that the supply was at 1 a.m.

The protesters further said that not only was the quantity limited in that a resident could not fetch more than four pots, the quality too was bad. The water was salty and unfit for cooking.

The women added that in the last 10 days or so the condition had worsened and they were getting water only once in 10 days.

As the police tried to pacify the women to clear the road, Chairman of the Municipality S. T. Prabakar rushed to the spot. He explained to the agitating women that the water supply had been poor because of frequent power cuts. He also told the women that the civic body was engaged in works to double the supply of water pumped from Cauvery.

Work would be completed soon, he said and added that erection of water tanks on streets also progressed at a fast pace.
