Prohibition raids in State intensified

Krishnagiri: Prohibition raids have been intensified in the State to prevent the flow of illicit distilled arrack, according to Additional Director General of Police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing, K.R. Shyam Sunder.

Talking to Reporters here on Monday, Mr. Sunder said in the wake of the illicit liquor tragedy at Hosur on May 17, the police had launched a crackdown on illicit liquor distillation centres.

286 cases registered

As many as 286 cases relating to prohibition were registered against 147 offenders in the district from May 19 to 25. A total of 17,890 litres of fermented wash, 7500 litres of illicit distilled arrack and 15 two-wheelers used for smuggling arrack were seized during the raids.

Steps had been taken to detain 12 habitual offenders under the Goondas Act, he said.

Mr. Sunder said till May, a total of 2,295 cases were registered against 2,144 offenders in the State.

A total of 3,39,040 litres of fermented wash and 65,809 litres of illicit distilled arrack were destroyed.

Joint mechanism

The enforcement agencies of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have decided to evolve a joint mechanism to conduct vehicle checks and raids along the border districts.

Both sides have agreed to exchange information on bootleggers involved in transportation of IMFL and rectified spirit.

He asked the people to call on 94432 22600, 94426 44112, (044) 2538 5883 (control room) to provide information on sale or distillation of illicit arrack. Identity of the informants would be kept secret.
