Candidates’ expenditure papers do not show much spending

Correspondent

Despite spiralling prices, they get the required material at very low prices

MAHABUBNAGAR: Going by the expenditure incurred by candidates of major political parties contesting Jadcherla byelections, the spiralling prices and inflation appear to have had little effect on them.

Expenditure papers submitted to election authorities by Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) candidates up to May 18 indicate that are getting everything much cheaper than the current market rates.

Since filing of the nominations to May 18, TDP candidate M. Chandra Sekhar had spent only Rs.1,16,847, Congress candidate Mallu Ravi Rs. 1,09,816 and TRS candidate C. Laxma Reddy Rs.1,82,551.

All the three candidates had mobilised their party workers and public in thousands on vehicles on the day of filing of their nomination papers.

After submitting their papers to the returning officer, they held public meetings with massive turn-up. But they spent very less amount which none could believe. The TDP candidate spent only Rs.24,000 on the day of nomination, the Congress candidate Rs.23,000 and the TRS candidate exactly Rs.54,870.

Each of the parties had published multi-coloured pamphlets for distribution among voters in lakhs, but it seems the printing press owners were generous in charging them. The Congress incurred only Rs.22, 875 for printing the pamphlets and the TRS Rs.20,875.

They spent only Rs.1,000 for providing food for their workers who were in thousands. For hiring 25 DCM vehicles, they paid only Rs.12,500 at the rate of Rs.500 each.

The TDP spent only Rs.800 for opening eight election offices and Rs.8,000 for the meetings of his state leaders.
