News Analysis
The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Left to oppose move to hike petro prices” (Early editions, May 24, 2008) was “Charting the Course: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat (centre), CPI general secretary A. B. Bardhan (left) and CPI leader D. Raja confer during a press conference in New Delhi on Friday.” The error was rectified in later editions, which had the caption “Charting the Course: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat (right), CPI general secretary A. B. Bardhan (left) and CPI leader D. Raja [centre] ….” In connection with a report “Another poll defeat for Labour” (“International” page, May 24, 2008), Hasan Suroor clarifies that Gwyneth Dunwoody was incorrectly described, in the fifth paragraph, as “former Speaker of the Commons”. In 2000, she was tipped to become Speaker but was overlooked. Further, her name should have been Gwyneth Dunwoody, and not Gwyneth Dundwoody, as was published. The heading of a hockey report (“Sport”, May 26, 2008) was “Germany triumphs”. The text said that Germany defeated Argentina 6-2 to win the women’s Champions Trophy hockey tournament at Monchengladbach on Sunday, while the results column gave it as “Final: Argentina 6 bt Germany 2”. The heading and the intro in the text were incorrect. The info box in a report “Australia continues fight for survival” (“Sport”, May 26, 2008) was “Hodge and Symonds rebuild from 19 for five”, while the text and results column gave it as 18 for five. The info box was wrong. The report was on the opening test against the West Indies. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
