This Day That Age
Police and army reinforcements on May 26 moved into Eastern and Northern Central Provinces of Ceylon in a bid to arrest the disturbances touched off by racial conflicts between the Tamil and Sinhalese people of the areas. A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been clamped down on Polonnaruwa in the North Central Provinces, bringing to a stop, sporadic acts of violence which had been reported. The situation in the two provinces is now reported to be under control. In a statement, the Prime Minister, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, deplored the “acts of hooliganism by irresponsible criminals” and urged the people to remain calm and “not to listen to various rumours that may spread.”
