51-year-old man arrested, stolen jewellery recovered

CHENNAI: The Vepery police arrested a 51-year-old man a couple of days ago in connection with a theft reported in the city last month-end.

According to police, the accused, G. Venkataramana Naidu of Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, is a habitual offender who confessed that he was involved in at least 100 theft cases in various places, including Vellore and Katpadi.

Naidu was convicted in a house break-in case in the Ennore police station limits last year and released from jail five months ago. He occasionally visits his family in Andhra Pradesh. The police said that he had confessed that he was a dossier criminal (one who operated outside his State of residence).

When he comes to Chennai he spends the night at the Egmore railway station. On April 24, he broke into the house of a retired government official on Kalathiappan Street in Vepery. The family was away and when it returned four days later, it found that the house had been burgled. A complaint was lodged with the Vepery police station.

The police had picked some persons for interrogation. One of them said that an elderly person was seen loitering in the area around the time of the reported theft.

The police arrested the accused and he confessed to the theft. They recovered 10 of the 13.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 750 grams of silver. Naidu had befriended one Kumaresan in Vellore jail and used him to sell the stolen jewellery. Naidu was remanded to custody in Puzhal prison.
