Pots kept for water at a public tap in Palankarai, on the outskirts of Tirupur, on Monday. —
TIRUPUR: The residents of Palankarai, 9 km from here on Tirupur-Avanashi highway, reel under shortage of drinking water for the last several months.
As the local body supplies a meagre 10 to 12 pots of water to a family once in three to four days, the residents depend on other sources. One could witness dozens of plastic pots kept in a row for drinking water in front of public taps on each street at Periyayipalayam, biggest hamlet in the panchayat.
M. Senthil Kumar, panchayat president, says the local body requires one lakh litres more every day. He said the local body had been supplying borewell water, which according to him was not potable.
