OVER TO POLICE: Noida double murder accused Dr. Rajesh Talwar being taken to court on Tuesday. –

NOIDA: Dr. Rajesh Talwar, who has been arrested on charges of murdering his 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and the family’s domestic help Hemraj, was remanded to three-day police custody by a court here on Tuesday.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashok Kumar Singh accepted the police request for custody of Dr. Talwar on the ground that his remand was essential for further investigations in the case. The police had sought seven-day remand for the accused dentist, but the court allowed a three-day remand.

Media persons were not allowed inside the court during the proceedings. However, there were reports that Dr. Talwar broke down in the courtroom and said he was being framed. He also denied having confessed to the murders.

A group of lawyers shouting slogans in support of the ongoing Gujjar movement in Rajasthan for Scheduled Tribe status entered the courtroom barely 15 minutes after the hearing began around 1-30 p.m. and disrupted the proceedings. Subsequently the court proceedings were postponed for almost an hour.

Dr. Talwar was brought to the court from Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad earlier in the morning for the hearing of his bail petition and the application filed by the police seeking his custody. The bail plea was earlier slated to be heard on Monday, but it had to be postponed till Tuesday due to a strike call by the lawyers in support of the Gujjar agitation.

Meanwhile, friends and schoolmates of young Aarushi took out a march from Delhi Public School in Noida to her Jalvayu Vihar residence in Sector 25 accusing the police and the media of maligning the image of the unfortunate girl who was no longer alive to defend herself.

“Stop character assassination”

Carrying placards with messages such as “Stop character assassination”, “Justice shall prevail” and “We will miss you”, Aarushi’s friends covered a distance of over a kilometre on foot and voiced their anger over the manner of investigations in the case.

“Almost ten days have passed since the murders took place, but the police have failed to satisfactorily work out the case. There are a number of questions that need to be answered,” said a friend of Aarushi’s.

“The truth should be brought to the public domain. If the police cannot do it, the case should be handed over to the CBI,” said another of Aarushi’s friends, adding, “The fight is not over. We will not sit silent and accept what the police are saying. She is being defamed without any evidence.”
