ALAPPUZHA: Police excesses on Youth Congress activists in various districts on Tuesday would not derail the agitation against the delay in implementing the Food Security Mission, Youth Congress state president T. Siddique has said. He said the police lathi-charge against Youth Congress activists in Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta was uncalled for. Several activists, including DCC office-bearers, were injured in the lathi-charge in Kozhikode and Alappuzha. He alleged that Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was using “Left-leaning” police officials to suppress the agitation. “We will not allow such attempts to stifle democratic agitations. The agitation will continue with more vigour," he said. The Youth Congress will burn the Home Minister in effigy across the State on Wednesday and take a march to the office of the Inspector General of Police (North Zone) on Monday. Meanwhile, Youth Congress has complained to the State Human Rights Commission against the “regular brutal treatment” meted out to its activists. Mr. Siddique has alleged that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was trying to divert the public attention from the failure to implement the food security scheme by commenting about fake sanyasis. The entire argument over chairmanship of the project was based on the CPI (M)’s attempts to keep the post, he alleged.
