All attentive: District Collector Shashibhushan Kumar addressing farmers in Khammam on Tuesday. — KHMMAM: The beneficiary committees will own 336 lift irrigation schemes having an ayacut of over 61,723 acres in the district. Almost all the LI schemes, barring the Cheruvu Madaram lift that had the highest ayacut of 10,000 acres, will be maintained by the beneficiary farmers. The APSIDC will train the farmers in handlings the schemes besides the use of power-saving devices. The operation and maintenance costs will also be borne by the farmers. Addressing a meeting of the farmers organised here to create awareness on the operation of the lifts, Collector Shashibhushan Kumar said the participation of the beneficiaries in the management of the lift schemes was expected to give the desired result. Technical assistanceHe stated that all the lift schemes with an ayacut of less that 10,000 acres would be handed over to the stewardship of the beneficiaries. They would be extended technical assistance and guidance. The farmers must shoulder all the responsibilities pertaining to the successful operation of the lifts and ensure effective maintenance taking cue from the self-help groups and DWCRA groups having over four lakh members in the district. Replying to some farmers, the Collector said that he would pay equal attention to the all sections, including the farmers and farm workers.
