Lokayukta to charge those who lied about assets, liabilities

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Lokayukta on Wednesday will file charge sheets against three MLAs and a former MLA for allegedly giving false declaration of assets and liabilities. This is for the second successive year that Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde has taken such action.

The charge sheets will be filed against two Congress MLAs Santosh Lad and C.P. Yogeshwar and against BJP MLA V.C. Charantimath. A charge sheet will be filed against A.V. Umapathy, the former Congress MLA from Holalkere, who unsuccessfully contested as an independent from Hiriyur Assembly Constituency.

Mr. Hegde has found the four have given false declarations of assets from the year 2006, which is an offence under Section 177 of Indian Penal Code.

This is the second time that Mr. Yogeshwar, who was elected from Channapatna Assembly constituency, will be charged.

It all began in 2007 when Mr. Hegde started to take steps to bring seriousness among legislators about submitting the mandatory annual declaration of assets and liabilities. He cautioned the legislators of initiating criminal cases if they failed to perform their mandatory duty and if they submitted false declaration. He also asked people file complaints if they find the declaration false.

Acting on one such complaint, Mr. Hegde directed the Lokayukta Registrar to file charge sheet against Mr. Yogeshwar in March 2007. Mr. Hegde had found that Mr. Yogeshwar had not given information a liability of Rs. 5 crore, about the car used by him, and about the shares he had held
