‘Kandoori’ festival from June 5

NAGAPATTINAM: The fortnight-long 451st annual ‘Kandoori’ festival of the Nagore Dargah near here begins on June 5 with the hoisting of the holy flag and concludes on June 18 with the dismounting of the flag.
The main event of ‘Sandanakoodu’ procession will be held on June 14 and the procession will start around 8.30 p.m. from Nagapattinam and reach the Nagore Dargah in the wee hours and the important ceremony of anointment of sandal paste on the Dargah will be performed around 4.30 a.m. on June 15.
The festival attracts thousands of devotees from various parts of the country and from other nations every year. The Dargah of Saint Hazrath Syed Shahul Hameed Quadir Wali in Nagore is more than five centuries old and the saint is said to be the 23rd descendent of Prophet Muhammed.
The saint was born and educated in Manickapur near Allahabad and when he came to Thanjavur on a pilgrimage, he cured the illness of Achuthrappa Naicken (16th century), the then King of Thanjavur.
The King gifted him lands in Nagore where the saint lived rest of his life serving the people irrespective of religion, caste or creed.
The saint’s death anniversary is celebrated as ‘Kandoori festival’ every year for 14 days at Nagore.
The district administration in coordination with the Nagore Dargah authorities have made elaborate security and other arrangements.
