This Day That Age
A series of bomb blasts rocked Beirut on May 26 and after the over-night truce renewed fighting between troops and rebels was reported. Security measures in Beirut were tightened as violence increased throughout the State. At least five persons were killed and 20 injured when a bomb was hurled at a moving tram in the crowded Christian quarter at Ferneshebak. A Reuter report from Beirut says an estimated 70 people were killed or injured in the explosion. The blast occurred a few hundred yards from the Foreign Ministry, just before Mr. Charles Malik, the Minister, was due to leave for New York to present Lebanon’s complaint to the Security Council.
