Parduman Singh of India won the first gold medal for India in the third Asian Games winning the shot put final with a heave of 15.04 metres bettering his record at Manila of 14.14 metres. Hitoshi Got of Japan was second with a mark of 14.80 metres while Uri Sohtar was third with 14.5 metres. Milkha Singh won India her second gold medal with an easy win in the 400 metres run in 47.00 seconds. Miss Elizabeth Davenport won a silver medal for India in the women’s javelin throw, with a new Asian Games distance of 46.07 metres, Japan’s Shida was first with 47.15 metres.
