The recent round of composite dialogue between India and Pakistan does not seem to have made a big headway. That is understandable because an entirely new set of leaders has just assumed power in Pakistan after nine years of the Musharraf regime. While some right noises have been made by Pakistan, what causes widespread concern is the new ‘peace deal’ that Pakistan is striking with the Taliban. Simultaneously, it has removed the curbs on the jihadi and sectarian outfits. Many hardcore terrorists have been freed from jails. It is therefore entirely conceivable, that after obtaining ‘peace’ in their current theatre of operations in NWFP and FATA, the terrorists will turn their attention to Kashmir and Afghanistan. The recent cross-LoC violations are ample proof of this developing threat. Does the present regime in Pakistan still believe that these outfits are another tier of its defence?
