Karnataka verdict

The Congress cannot dismiss successive defeats outright saying the elections were “fought on regional issues.” It has to do more to better its tally in Parliament elections. It is time to spell out steps to eliminate factionalism in the State units and project a prime ministerial candidate.

P. Guru Prasad,

It is a pity that the Congress chose to lose election after election just to protect the power of the ‘high command’ (The signals from Karnataka for Sonia Gandhi, May 26). Ms Gandhi should come out of this oft-failed policy and shed her preference for status quo.

Kudos to Surendra for his remarkable portrayal (May 27) of where the Congress is headed in the run-up to 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The Karnataka poll verdict should serve as a wake-up call to the party.

P.P. Sethumadhavan,

Although the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in Karnataka, the survival of its government would depend on support from the independent legislators. Though they are at liberty to lend outside support to any dispensation, they can withdraw their support any time. In Karnataka, their help so is so crucial for government stability that they are the real winners. Why not amend the anti-defection law suitably to permit the independents to join a party of their choice within six months of election as in the case of nominated members and inform the presiding officer that if they desert that party, they will stand disqualified?

Hemant Kumar,

Ambala City (Haryana)

The independent MLAs who have extended their support to the BJP should not rock the boat for the full term of the government.

Ziaullah Khan,

Bangalore
