Corrections and clarifications

The strapline of an article “Multi-pronged strategy comes in handy for BJP [in Karnataka]” (May 26, 2008) was “With two members in 1985, it has grown by leaps and bounds”. The BJP opened its account in 1983 by wining 18 seats of the 110 it contested.

An article “75-year-old becomes oldest to climb Everest” (“Newscape” page, May 26, 2008) had said, in the second paragraph, that Mount Everest is 8,848 metres high.

The figure — 29,028 feet (8,848 m) — was determined by the Survey of India in 1954 and verified by the National Geographic magazine for its November 1988 issue. But on November 11, 1999, Bradford Washburn, the esteemed mountain photographer-explorer who directed the Millennium Expedition, presented the latest results to the American Alpine Club. He said, “… we are now prepared to give you an extremely accurate, up-to-the-minute new altitude for Mount Everest. It is 8,850 metres (29,035 feet) … Even these figures are subject to change — by a lot and at any moment — as they are directly dependent upon the behaviour of the great thrust-fault system that is shoving India under Nepal and China to create the Himalaya … At this moment, six months later, Mount Everest may already be a trifle higher, as well as slightly northeast of the position that it occupied early in May!” (In the Millennium Expedition, scientists and climbers used the global positioning system and radar to measure Mount Everest.) The Embassy of Nepal also gives the figure of 8,850m.

Kahlil Gibran was referred to as a Persian poet in an article “Please do not smother budding talents!” (“Open Page”, May 25, 2008). We repeat the clarification we issued on May 17, 2006. “Most websites on Gibran refer to him as a Lebanese-American essayist, novelist, poet and artist.”

“New Zealand stutters after a brisk start” (“Sport”, May 24, 2008) was an early report in which New Zealand went to tea at 180 for four with Taylor’s individual score at 57. The scoreboard was right in mentioning it as 57. The second paragraph in this report had incorrectly mentioned it as 53. The error was rectified in later editions.

In a report “Harsh, Ashutosh pair in final” (“Sport”, May 23, 2008), the last paragraph said the “93rd ranked Lu will meet the big-serving Guillermo Alcaide of Spain who first beat the third-seeded Kristian Pless of Denmark in the third set of the unfinished quarterfinals earlier in the day before pulling past Thomas Oger of France in another three setter”, while the results column gave it as “Pre-quarterfinals: Guillermo Alcaide bt Kristian Pless 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.” Alcaide first beat Pless in an unfinished pre-quarterfinal, then went on to beat Thomas Oger in the quarters.

The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Daredevils starts favourites” (“Sport”, May 19, 2008) was “Hoping for the Best: A.B. de Villiers feels Delhi Daredevils has to win all its remaining matches to stay in contention for a place in the last eight.” It should have been “last four”.
