Rastogi advances

NEW DELHI: The fifth-seeded Karan Rastogi defeated Patrick Eichenberger of Switzerland 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the $15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament in Kuwait on Tuesday.

It was a welcome return to the circuit for wildcard Rastogi after he had missed the two Challengers in Delhi with a strained back.

Navdeep Singh too advanced as his opponent, the top-seeded V. Mazarakis of Greece retired when the Indian was leading 4-0 in the first set.

However, Purav Raja lost to the eighth-seeded Riccardo Ghedin of Italy 2-6, 3-6 and Rohan Gajjar went down 6-7(1), 3-6 to Frank Wintermantel of Germany.

In doubles, the top-seeded Gajjar and Raja sailed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Issam Al Taweel and Hayan Maarouf of Syria.

The third-seeded Leon Frost of Australia and Navdeep beat Ahmed Al Bitar of Egypt and Mathias Arnell of Sweden 6-4, 6-1 in another first round tie.
