Srinagar: Host Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh entered the pre-quarterfinals of 62nd J&K Bank National football championship for the Santosh Trophy after defeating Daman and Diu and Puducherry respectively here on Tuesday. In other matches, Meghalaya beat Uttarakhand 3-1, while Services outclassed Nagaland 8-0 at Jammu. Jammu and Kashmir registered its second straight win when it defeated Daman and Diu 4-0 in a one-sided match at the Bakshi Stadium. The host had defeated Puducherry 2-0 in its first match on Sunday.
J&K scored its first goal in the 10th minute when Bilal found the net and the team held on to the lead till the breather. After changeover, Taufeeq, Zubair and Rezwan found the target in the 55th, 60th and 65th minutes respectively to make it 4-0. Himachal also won its second successive game by getting the better of Puducherry 3-2 in an evenly-contested encounter at the Polo ground. Vivek scores Himachal surged ahead when substitute Vivek Sharma scored in the 11th minute. However, Puducherry restored parity within minutes when Jaya Selvan found the net and one minute later, another substitute Karunanidhi increased the lead for Puducherry to 2-1. Ajay Rana rose to the occasion for Himachal and scored a brace in the 40th and 42nd minutes to give his side full points. It had defeated Daman and Diu 4-2 on Monday and will take on hosts J & K in the last fixture of Cluster IV on Wednesday. — PTI
