BANGALORE: President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) M. Mallikarjun Kharge was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) here on Wednesday. Mr. Kharge, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Chitapur constituency in Gulbarga district, will be occupying the post for the second time. He was CLP leader when the late J.H. Patel was Chief Minister. He was declared elected after a daylong exercise to arrive at a consensus on the basis of a ballot in the presence of two general secretaries of the All-India Congress Committee — Digvijay Singh and Prithviraj Chavan. Mr. Chavan said that the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramiah had proposed Mr. Kharge’s name, and the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar had seconded the resolution. ResignationMr. Chavan said that Mr. Kharge, who met party president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday, had tendered his resignation as president of the KPCC. Mr. Kharge was asked to continue in the post till alternative arrangements were made, Mr. Chavan said. Asked who would take over as president of the KPCC, Mr. Chavan said that somebody would be nominated to the post after some time. Mr. Chavan and other party leaders congratulated Mr. Kharge.
