Renewable energy sources in focus

The evolving energy crisis and the rising prices of crude oil have brought the renewable energy sector in sharp focus. Not only the government, but the private sector is also depending on non-conventional sources for power generation. The trend is set to attain more significance in the coming days.

The Kochi-based enterprise Lifeway Solar, which has developed a host of products working on solar energy, has launched a solar power generator. In simple terms, the generator uses the sun’s rays for power generation.

The proprietor of the enterprise, K.Georgekutty, said that the product would offer an attractive alternative to people who wish to install power generators.

The company has also developed solar energy-based incubator and milking machine.

Another initiative in the sector is the solar boat launched by CGH Earth, the Kochi-based hotel group. The boat is intended to transport tourists to its resort at Mararikkulam in Alappuzha. The innovative project is expected to usher in an era of clean transport on the waterways.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), on its part, is promoting solar energy based projects across the country. In 2007-08, the Ministry supported nine solar energy plants in six States, under various programmes.

Maharashtra tops the list with three plants while Jammu & Kashmir has two. West Bengal, Orissa, Haryana and Chattisgarh have one each. These projects are being implemented through nodal agencies of the respective States.
