Students of M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology design F1 race car BAnGALORE: A bunch of talented and enthusiastic students from the M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology have done what their peers would not even have dreamt of. While students from the college have entered their innovations into various competitions, this group of 10 have gone that extra mile and designed an F1 race car! The students — Pradeep Kumar S. (sixth semester, industrial engineering and management); Srinivas S.K. (sixth semester, industrial engineering and management); Abhijeeth N. (sixth semester, telecommunication engineering); Govardhan T. (sixth semester, telecommunication engineering); Abhijith S. (sixth semester, mechanical engineering); Oswald Jason Lobo (sixth semester, mechanical engineering); Kishor Kumar Reddy G. (sixth semester, mechanical engineering); Sunil Pai (fourth semester, mechanical engineering); and Rajat Umarji (fourth semester, mechanical engineering) — are being guided by N.V.R. Naidu, head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. These students, who are passionate about car racing, are designing the F1 car, and will represent the country at FSAE Japan, an internationally renowned car design competition organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The competition is scheduled to be held in Japan in September this year. They have already completed the designing and setting of the chassis, an individual suspension for each wheel, brakes assembly (all four wheels have disc brakes that are operated by two master cylinders — one for the front and another for the back), accelerator connections, clutch connections, steering (rack and pinion, steering wheel is removable), drive shaft and gear lever fitted to operate effectively and engine tuning. However, these young designers have now hit a financial roadblock. The project budget is estimated at Rs. 18 lakh.“We have managed to pump in about Rs. 1.5 lakh ourselves. The college helped us in registering for the competition.”
