Kozhikode school scene upbeat

Maleeha Raghaviah

District-level book distribution from June 2

Students of 1,200 schools to get textbooks free

KOZHIKODE: The district school scene is upbeat.

There is cause for jubilation as the district educational authorities will not have to field endless queries from parents, teachers and others concerned on when school textbooks will be available this year.

The reason: eighty per cent of the textbooks required by students in government and government-aided schools during the first 60 days of the academic year have already been despatched to schools in the district.

‘No need to wait’

It is usual for students to wait for the textbooks indefinitely, sometimes even up to the start of the second term, sources say.

“The textbooks for students in classes I to VIII in government and government-aided schools in the district are being distributed through the block resource centres,” A. Moosa, District Education Officer, says.

As many as 13 block resource centres have been vested with the responsibility of distributing the textbooks so that they are available to the students at school re-opening.

“Not only will the textbooks be available to students on the re-opening day on June 2, another novel aspect is that they will be provided free too to students of the 1,200 government and government-aided schools in the district,” M.T. Premarajan, District Programme Officer, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, says.

“More than 80 per cent of the textbooks that students will need during the first 60 days of the academic year have been distributed to the schools,” K. Ashokan, officer at the Urban Resource Centre, Nadakkavu, says.

Mr. Moosa said the district-level book distribution would be inaugurated by Forests Minister Benoy Viswom at the Valayam government upper primary school, Nadapuram, on June 2.

Praveshanolsavam

The district-level ‘Praveshanolsavam’ will be inaugurated by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy at the Andetta government school, Koyilandy.

The book distribution in the Corporation area will be inaugurated by Mayor M. Bhaskaran at a programme at the Tiruvannur government upper primary school.

Mr. Premarajan said a set of nine textbooks would be distributed to students in Class VIII and VII.
