KOCHI: Packaging of imported urea at Cochin Port godowns was paralysed on Wednesday following a dispute over employing workers’ groups other than those regularly involved in the process. Urea weighing 23,000 tonnes, imported by Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) from Saudi Arabia and which arrived here on Monday, is being packed in bags quickly for despatch to farmers in time for the kharif season preparations. At least 1,000 tonnes of urea has to be packaged daily to make the operations cost-effective. However, sufficient number of workers was not available after about 300 tonnes were bagged on Tuesday. To pack 1,000 tonnes, there is a requirement of about 20 groups. However, since they were not available, the help of other workers was sought.
