CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S.F. Rodrigues on Wednesday asked the Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Commissioner to coordinate the removal of encroachments in the city to maintain its distinctive character. He directed the senior officials of the Chandigarh Administration to strictly follow the rules of business and not do anything wrong under any kind of pressure. He further said that strict action must be taken against violators as per legal processes. He asked the officers to check the occurrence and growth of unauthorised and illegal structures on government land while emphasising the need for further activating and strengthening the monitoring and enforcement wings besides the system of accountability and responsibility. Gen. Rodrigues asked the officers to make the system of governance service-oriented for the benefit of the common man with no place for commercial content and vested interests. Referring to the recent controversy over the Municipal Solid Waste Management Project, he expressed concern over “misguided endeavour of vested interests on this vital issue of great public interest” and emphasised that the Administration and the Municipal Corporation must work for improving the quality of life of the people. He said development of Manimajra town and Hallomajra should be given top priority and professional teams must be set up to identify and meet the growing needs of the city. The blueprint for the scheme for modernisation and development of all villages in the Union Territory, with the participative endeavour of people, had been prepared, he added.
