Gale disrupts rail traffic

Shattering impact: A giant tree uprooted by gales lying across the railway track in Dornakal-Manuguru section at Gandhinagar in Khammam district on Wednesday. —
KHMMAM: Strong gale that swept across Yellandu area in Khammam district left a trail of destruction on Wednesday evening. The Railways had borne the brunt of the damage caused by the winds. Giant trees that were uprooted under the impact crashed on the rail track at Gandhinagar and seven other places in Dornakal and Manuguru section. Goods trains transporting coal to different destinations from Manuguru and Kothagudem came to a screeching halt.
So was the case with the passenger trains as well in the section. The traction lines also got snapped. The railway gates at the Gandhinagar level crossing were closed for more than an hour as a precautionary measure in view of the damage caused to the traction lines.
It affected the movement of the vehicular traffic on Khammam -Yellandu road. Thousands of passengers were stranded till late in the evening at the place.
The railway personnel reached the spot immediately and plunged into action.
Efforts were being made to clear the traction.
The restoration of the traction lines was likely to take a day or more, according to sources.
