PANAJI: The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), a statutory body governing education and pharma profession in the country, has moved the Union Government for an amendment to the Pharmacy Act, 1948. The move is aimed at streamlining pharma education, president of PCI and Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) B. Suresh disclosed here on Monday. Apart from upgrading educational opportunities and also expanding the scope of employment for students, the amended Act will help ensure uniformity in pharmacy colleges all over the country. More importantly, pharmacists will be made more accountable on account of the inbuilt “practice regulations” in the proposed amendment. Incidentally, it will be for the first time that this Act will be amended since its inception in 1948. Speaking about the IPA, Mr. Suresh expressed concern over statements emanating from the Union Government over the possibility of getting IPA under the purview of the Department of Chemicals and Fertilizers. He said the IPA is working towards the formulation of a Central Drugs Authority which will enable it bring some changes in the licensing procedure in this field in the country.
