Protest march: Gujjars holding a candlelight vigil near India Gate in New Delhi on Wednesday in protest against the Rajasthan Government demanding its dismissal. NEW DELHI: In view of a “chakka jam” call issued for Thursday by the All-India Gujjar Sangharsh Maha Sabha in the National Capital Region, the Delhi police have made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident. The traffic police have advised commuters to keep off entry roads to the Capital on Thursday. Gujjar strongholds in Delhi have been identified and security personnel deployed there to prevent any disruption of life. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. N. Shrivastava on Wednesday said roads in South Delhi and East Delhi would have to bear the brunt of the protests. In South Delhi, commuters have been asked to avoid National Highway-8, which leads up to Gurgaon, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and Mathura Road, besides adjoining roads. Loni Road, Wazirabad Road, Grand Trunk Road, National Highway-24, Noida Link Road and Chilla Check Post may witness road blockades and traffic disruptions owing to demonstrations in the trans-Yamuna area. “We have chalked out contingency plans in case of road blockades. Alternative routes have been identified,” said Mr. Shrivastava. Special Branch sleuths have been deployed to develop information on suspicious activities and take appropriate measures to prevent violence on the Capital’s roads. In another development, the Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Sangharsh Samiti on Wednesday announced that it would hold sit-ins outside the offices of the Bharatiya Janata Party at the block, tehsil, district and State levels to protest against “unprovoked firing” at the members of Gujjar community in Rajasthan, and also in support of their demand for Scheduled Tribe status. On Wednesday, protesters burnt tyres and blocked traffic on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road in neighbouring Gurgaon.
