CHENNAI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh called on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence on Wednesday “to wish him on his birthday,” which falls on June 3.

“The purpose of my visit is to wish Karunanidhiji a very happy birthday because I will not be in Delhi when his birthday actually takes place. So I have come beforehand to wish him,” he told presspersons emerging from the meeting. “This is the real purpose of my visit,” he asserted when asked if there was a political angle to it.

At the meeting, Mr. Karunanidhi voiced his primary concern: the need to bring down prices of essential commodities. “This we are trying to,” said Mr. Singh. On Karnataka, he said the Congress had “accepted the verdict of the people. But I am sure the situation will be analysed, and the party will come to some conclusions.”

Asked about speeding up the setting up of three Central Universities in Tamil Nadu, he said the government “would certainly try to.” No timeframe could be given, he said, adding that setting up was part of the approvals during the 11th plan period. “Within this plan all these things will be done.”

On creamy layer, he said the Congress was in discussion with all its allies and will try to find a way out. “At the moment, we are implementing the orders of the Supreme Court.” On his comments on Rahul Gandhi being fit to become Prime Minister, he said: “Please. All that is in the past.”

He was accompanied by Congress MP representing The Nilgris, R. Prabhu. After delimitation, The Nilgris will be a reserved constituency. MP and HRD Standing Committee Member Kanimozhi was present.
