Special Correspondent

UP IN ARMS: State general secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai inaugurating a dharna organised by the Association of Engineers, Kerala in front of the Secretariat on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State general secretary of Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai has called for reconsidering the decision to compulsorily redeploy engineers in government service to the Local Self-Government Department.

The RSP leader, who was inaugurating a dharna organised by the Association of Engineers, Kerala, in front of the Secretariat on Wednesday in protest against compulsory redeployment, protection of the right to return to the parent department and allowing re-option facility, said the benefits given to doctors should be extended to engineers too.

V. Surendran Pillai, MLA; District Congress Committee (DCC) president and former MP V.S. Sivakumar; D.Suresh Babu, president, Irrigation Engineers Association; and Satheesh Kumar, general secretary, Graduate Engineers Association; were among those who spoke at the meeting .

Protest march

The engineers earlier took out a march from the Public Office area to the Secretariat. They were led by K.V. Mathew, president, and P.R. Jayaprakash, general secretary of the association.

The leaders of the association said they had brought to the government’s attention the difficulties being faced by engineers of the Irrigation and Public Works departments who were redeployed to the Local Self-Government Department, but the redeployment was continuing.

They also expressed protest over the “neglect” of engineers in the pay revision and the failure to maintain parity.
