Focus on mental health
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Long ignored and looked down upon, mental health and its related issues are probably for the first time getting the attention they deserve in this country.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under its National Mental Health Programme will soon be releasing a series of advertisements – audio, video and posters – to educate the public on issues relating to mental health.
“In India non-communicable diseases are emerging as a major public health problem and there is an urgent need to understand issues related to them. A series of media publicity material about mental health would be released soon and this includes five video, audio and poster capsules educating the general public about mental health and related illness. This is the first time such an effort is being made to reach out to the general public with such a sensitive issue that often gets sidelined when it comes to providing wide publicity about communicable and non-communicable disease,” said the Chief Medical Officer at the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Jagdish Kaur. Created with help from the World Health Organisation and to be made available in 12 regional languages , this latest series will highlight issues relating to the stigma attached to mental health and how mental illness can be treated with proper guidance and medical help.
