Stay sought on notice by Forest Department cancelling project on Handigondi rock BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday adjourned to June 6 a petition by Sanghamitra Foundation which had sought a stay on the December 6, 2005 notice by the Forest Department cancelling the permission given to it to sculpt a 712-foot statue of Gautam Buddha on the Handigondi rock in Ramanagaram. The foundation said it had decided to sculpt the statue of Gautam Buddha on a monolithic rock at Gopalapura village on the Bangalore-Mysore highway at Ramanagaram, 50 km from Bangalore. It said it had identified the Handigondi rock as most suitable for the statue. It said it had applied to the Forest Department for permission for diversion (conversion) of land under Section 2 of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Though permission was initially given, it was withdrawn due to a public outcry. The foundation said it had already invested a lot of money for sculpting the statue and that it had also the blessings of the Dalai Lama to go ahead with the project. It urged the court to stay the December 6, 2005 notice. Justice K. Bhaktavatsala adjourned further hearing on the case.
