Yercaud Summer Festival begins

Over 500 flower arrangements on display

YERCAUD: The four-day annual Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show got under way in the crown of Shevaroy’s hills on Wednesday. Over 10,000 potted plants and 30,000 cut flowers have been used for this years flower show organised at the Anna Park. Over 500 flower arrangements including a tower made of flowers are on display.

Inaugurating the festival, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said that the State Government spruced up all the tourists attractions in the hill resort. Yercaud had attracted about 4.5 lakh tourists last year. More tourists were expected to visit this year.

The minister said that Tamil Nadu had attracted about 5.6 core domestic tourists and 17.53 lakh tourists from other countries in the last fiscal, which was higher when compared to the tourist arrival in 2006-07.

Listing out the efforts taken up to promote tourism sector in the State, Mr. Arumugam said that the Government was improving all the tourist attractions including Yercaud in the State and creating modern amenities.

The Government allotted lands and funds to develop botanical garden in the hill resort, he added. Earlier, he declared open the flower show, fruits and vegetable exhibition and multimedia exhibition.

He also flagged off a mini-bus service operated by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation to various places in the hill resort.

Deputy Speaker of State Assembly V.P. Duraisamy also spoke. Collector N. Mathivanan presided. Salem MP K.V. Thankgabalu, Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini, Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman, Salem range Deputy Inspector General of Police N. Chenbaharaman, District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, District Rural Development Project Officer D. Jagannathan and senior officials were present.
