PAP water users’ plea for review of accord
Staff Reporter
Coimbatore: The Federation of Water Users Association of the PAP has appealed to Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments to review the Parambikulam Aliyar Project agreement.
In a memorandum, S.R. Rajagopal, president and K.S. Balachander, vice-president, said Kerala government instead of making impractical demands should have a rational and positive approach in reviewing the agreement.
The government should keep in mind the hardship being experienced by the PAP farmers in Tamil Nadu.
Responding to Kerala’s contention, they pointed out that the inter-State agreement had envisaged 30.5 tmcft of water for Tamil Nadu and 19.55 tmcft for Kerala based on the yield.
This also included diversion of 2.5 tmcft of water from Anamalayar for which the basic condition was that Kerala Government should have completed the Idamalayar hydro power project.
Though the above project was completed about 20 years ago, Kerala Government was refusing to announce the same, stating that canal works were on for the project, they claimed.
