dated May 29, 1958: Developments in France

The Pflimlin Government in France resigned early on May 28 after fighting against a rising tide of pressure from outside and inside Parliament. M. Pflimlin’s resignation left the way open for General De Gaulle’s return to power, but did not necessarily ensure it. The Cabinet’s resignation followed a vote which failed to give the Government an absolute majority in the Assembly if the Communist votes were not taken into consideration and it followed the defection from the Government of three of its four Conservative Ministers.
