Sabeeth shines in TN’s win

Jammu: Riding on twin strikes by C.S. Sabeeth, Tamil Nadu notched up a 2-0 victory over Chandigarh in its Cluster I match of the 62nd J&K Bank National football championship for the Santosh Trophy here on Wednesday.

Sabeeth left the Chandigarh defenders clueless and pumped in one goal each on either side of the breather at the Maulana Azad Ground.

Though starting the game in a defensive mode, Tamil Nadu attacked later and Sabeeth opened the account in the 37th minute with a powerful shot.

He netted his team’s second goal in the 68th minute to give his side the cushion.

At Srinagar, Madhya Pradesh escaped with a goalless draw against Assam in a Cluster VI match. The winner of the match between Assam (one point) and Haryana (one point) will top the group and move into the pre-quarterfinals.

In the other matches, Jharkhand defeated Uttar Pradesh 3-2, while Railways and Mizoram split points with 1-1 draw. — PTI
