Coimbatore in quarterfinals

Kayalpatnam: Coimbatore and Tiruvallur entered the quarterfinals of the 17th State youth football championship for the A.G. Subburaman Memorial Cup, defeating Tiruchi 3-1 and Cuddalore 4-2 respectively here on Wednesday.

Four goals, including a hat-trick, by Michael Joseph helped Nilgiris thrash Nagapatnam 5-0 in a first round match.

The results: Pre-quarterfinals: Coimbatore 3 (Dennis Brinto 2, Pradeep Pandyan) bt Tiruchi 1 (Ramanan); Tiruvallur 4 (Sudhakaran 2, Dilip Kumar, Sam Abisekaran) bt Cuddalore 2 (Sivapriyan, Edwin Kannan).

First round: Nilgiris 5 (Michael Joseph 4 including a hat-trick, Shankar) bt Nagapattinam 0; Virudhunagar w/o Sivagangai.

UDC posts win

At Ramanathapuram, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College (Tiruchi) defeated Olympus CC (Madurai) by 14 runs to enter the quarterfinals of the Nayagan Trophy State-level Twenty20 cricket tournament on Wednesday.

The scores: Urumu Dhanalakshmi College (Tiruchi) 115 for five in 20 overs (Balaji 30, Sivaraj 42 n.o.) bt Olympus CC (Madurai) 101 in 20 overs (Madhan four for 25, Sakthivel three for 18); Sri Renuga Mills CC (Theni) 114 for eight in 20 overs (Pushparaj 43) lost to Sri Vari Groups CC (Karaikudi) 115 for three in 16 overs (Ashok 27 n.o., Pandyan 44).

Niral stuns Venkatesh

Promising youngster Niral A. Shah of Tamil Nadu pulled off a surprise 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 win over top seed and Statemate Venkatesh Krishna to enter the under-14 boys’ singles semifinals of the CDTA-AITA Talent Series tennis tournament in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

Harshvardhan Raj, the eighth seed, went down without a fight to Vignesh Prabhu of Tamil Nadu 1-6, 1-6.
