685 new leprosy cases identified in State

Bargah district has the highest number of 69 leprosy patients


BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has identified 685 new patients with

leprosy in addition to existing 3,283 patients those are undergoing treatments in the State.

Of the new patients, 255 were identified to be women, 146 belonged to Scheduled Tribe and 142 were Scheduled Caste people while 58 were found to be children. The figures came to the light at a review meeting attended by Deputy Director General (Leprosy) in the Union Health Ministry P. L. Joshi, State Health Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey and country representative of WHO Indranath Banerjee. Bargah district has the highest number of 69 leprosy patients, while Rayagada district had the lowest patients i.e; only two.

Other districts such as Angul, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Sonepur and Cuttack had 51, 49, 44, 39 and 37 patients respectively.

According to Health Department communication, Centre will provide Rs. 90.03 lakh for the year 2008-09 towards information, education and communication (IEC), welfare of patients .

The State Government claimed that significant success was achieved in eradication of leprosy from the State. In 1983, the State had 3.2 lakh patients with leprosy while the rate prevalence was estimated to be 121.4 per each 10,000 population. Now it has been brought down to below 5,000 mark after 24 years of eradication programme.
